Two weeks ago, we went on a family vacation. After one of my runs, I posted an Instagram Story with a poll asking if you also run on your family vacations and the vast majority answered – yes!"
In this post, I will write a few tips on how to combine a fun family vacation with workouts.
Why bother exercising during a vacation? The truth is, you don't really have to; sometimes, a few days of complete rest work wonders for physical recovery, and no less importantly, for mental rejuvenation. But given that many of us are "addicted" to workouts, an occasional training session helps us unwind, and maintain fitness, yet the true added value for me is experiencing new and beautiful trails in an unfamiliar place.
What to bring for the workout?
It is highly recommended to bring your phone, ID card, some cash (for purchasing drinks on the way or for emergencies like using public restrooms or even money for a return taxi), but most importantly, the exact address of the hotel.
How do you know where to run?
Today, there are several apps like Strava or MapMyRun that can find routes based on your location. You can upload the route to your running watch and run accordingly. I must admit that it has never worked 100% for me, mainly due to unclear directions for small paths where it's not clear if you should turn right or just slightly right. Therefore, in any case, it's advisable to understand the general direction and avoid navigation challenges. Personally, I prefer running in large parks on circular or out-and-back routes.
Who can you run with?
Of course, I wouldn't recommend meeting with strangers... But through various Facebook groups, you can easily find groups that go for shared runs. A polite message to the organizers will most likely lead to an invitation for a joint run. It might sound a bit creepy, but it's quite easy to spot other running enthusiasts in the area. Hint: Wearing a "Finisher" shirt can help identify them... and then, of course, you can check with them about running together.
The most important thing to remember is that a vacation is not a training camp! Always prioritize family over workout hours.
!!!Have a pleasant vacation
