When the distance gets longer, the role of efficiency and comfort required from a shoe becomes increasingly crucial. The newly launched GlideRide is an exciting addition to this category of running shoes, and might challenge the way you define your long runs.

Personally, after switching from swimming to long distance triathlons, I'm still a bit of a fish out of water and in the constant lookout for any extra help with maintaining my stride when the running distance gets longer. This is why I was particularly interested in trying out the new GlideRide, launching on September 27th.

First, it does look disruptive. Sleek and visibly curvy profile gives an impression of a running shoe like no other. Looks aside, the shoe features GUIDESOLE™ technology, which combines the curved sole with a stiff forefoot, together increasing runner's efficiency by reducing ankle flexion and providing a landing zone that it shock-absorbent. The effect is immediate - the curved shoe propels the foot forward and gives a rolling feeling together with the bounciness of the FlyteFoam® midsole. GlideRide's fit could be classified as regular, and the mesh upper of the shoe gives a nice sense of stability. The 5mm drop (30 mm in the heel and 25 mm in the forefoot) supports both heel and mid-foot strikers.

My two weeks of test driving mainly consisted of 5k to 10k runs on asphalt, as I'm currently recovering from an injury. For me these runs have been a transition back to more normal distance training, and this is where GlideRide delivered what was initially promised: it gave me the confidence needed when increasing the running distance again.

Regardless of its disruptive looks, I got the hang of the shoe and running with it perhaps quicker than I had expected. After two weeks of testing I however still stick with my first impression: GlideRide gives a distinctively propelling yet very comfortable ride. The cushioning of the shoe makes its comfortability level optimal for long distance, but the overall feeling of the shoe remains quite light, which is something I much prefer. Regardless of having really enjoyed the shoe during these weeks of getting back on track again, I feel like it has much more potential going forward - it will be exciting to see how this added efficiency affects my marathon time when the recovery period is over.
