Every ASICS running shoe begins with 5 principles in mind – and where the shoe sits in each of these areas defines what kind of shoe it is.

When we’re designing our running shoes, we ask whether this shoe is for:

Then each shoe is defined within 5 attributes , each one having a spectrum that goes from one extreme to the other. Where the shoe sits tells you what kind of shoe it is and who it’s for…

Cushioning

When your foot lands on the ground, cushioning is there to soften the impact . It goes under your heel and forefoot, and sometimes runs all the way through the midsole from top to bottom.

How much you need depends on your weight, typical speed and training regime.

Maximum <-------------------------------------------------------> Light

Support

This is all about how much the shoe stabilises your foot as you run . If you’re an overpronator, the support keeps your foot from rolling too far inwards and makes sure all your effort is helping you go forward.

But runners who have a neutral running style – where their foot rolls inward just the right amount – don’t need the stabilising technology. They may like a little bit though, just to keep their foot secure when they get tired late on in a run.

None <-------------------------------------------------------> Extra

Ride

This is all about how much your foot feels the ground below as you run. Many runners like that close feeling and the fact they need to respond to any changes in terrain.

But lots of runners prefer something more comfortable and relaxed, and like to run with soft, bouncy materials underfoot.

Direct <-------------------------------------------------------> Plush

Fit

How the shoe fits around the top of your foot is crucial – it can either be very tight and foot-hugging, or it can be a little roomier for wider feet.

The benefit of a tighter fit is also the added stability, since the shoe keeps your foot clamped in place around the middle.

Tight <-------------------------------------------------------> Wide

Grip

Every shoe needs grip to some extent – but how much grip defines whether the shoe is for tough, technical trails or synthetic track surfaces.

Weather plays a part too – if it’s raining you’ll need a little more to keep your feet secure.

Track <-------------------------------------------------------> Trail
