We're slowly moving from autumn into winter here in the deep south and that means it's time for citrus fruits and things such as kiwis and avocados. All are super tasty and offer amazing health benefits for runners, however one of our favourites remains the grapefruit.
Here's why:
- It packs a massive punch of Vitamin C and Vitamin A (more than an orange) – which is exactly what you need to keep your immune system strong so you can make the most of your training sessions.
- Grapefruit can also help to lower your triglyceride levels (good for your heart and arteries).
- They contain more antioxidants, specifically beta carotene and lycopene – which are both great fighters against most disease and some inflammation.
- Grapefruit has also been shown to possibly help control blood sugar thanks to the fact it has a low glycemic index (around 25). For comparison – a banana is 48, and watermelon is 72.
Need we say more? Except perhaps, enjoy!
