Some of the lessons our ASICS FrontRunners have learnt during lockdown and how they've used these to make improvements to their running

REST BETTER

"One of the big elements of my training regime which lacked before lock down was rest," says  Quaniet Jakoet. "Before lockdown, being a full-time worker, father and husband with three kids meant time was a premium and midday naps and unbroken nights' sleep was only a dream."

"Now, under lockdown, later sleeps (because I don't need to wake up for work or very early morning training) are enjoyed and midday naps are a reality."

"What it has shown me is that after lockdown, if I want my body to perform at a peak, then I need to be persistent at ensuring I incorporate better rest into my training. Now that I know it does my body and mind so well. This has added so much to my mental focus as well which has played a big part in being able to push myself under lockdown conditions."

NUTRITION IS KEY
"
Nutrition is key to any athlete," says Vicky Oelofse. "I see my body as a car and the nutrition is the petrol that fuels it, so keeping nutrition balanced has been crucial," she says, adding that the 'alone time' has also been refreshing. "For the first time I can sit back and adjust my focus. Same goals, but a different drive and view on how to achieve it."

EASIER THAN YOU THINK
"
Something I have learnt about fitness is how easy it is to exercise at home without any equipment," explains Shalom Chitanda"Since I started gym a few years ago I have forgotten how effective and convenient home workouts can be. My fitness journey started with simple home workouts in high school so it feels like I’ve come full circle now."

"I have also used this time to push myself to do new exercises and work on the areas I tend to neglect such as my core strength and flexibility."

IMPROVISE
"
The best way to get through your training in the day was to set goals and a time table," says Linda Kinloch. "I realised that I definitely need structure as this encouraged me to train even when I didn't feel like it."

According to Linda she had to improvise with what she had at home, to make it happen. "Fortunately for me I had a punching bag and gloves. I decided to change my training from running to kickboxing."

"Working-out for an hour a day on the bag has definitely kept my overall fitness up and mentally did me wonders."

INSPIRATION IS ALL AROUND
"I have developed a love for fitness blogs," says Reegan Caine. "Although seemingly obvious, I often find my social feeds are saturated with friend's and their blogs but never find the time to digest all they have to offer, however during this time I managed to grow that side of me and find a new appreciation for blogs."

WORK YOUR WEAKNESSES
"
For me, strength-training and stretching has been a big priority," says Wandisile Nongodlwana. "I have been doing a lot of core strength work and it has done wonders."

"I normally sit most of the day when I am working, but now I have found my posture improving," he says.
