Autumn events are just around the corner and now’s the time to get signed up. Here are a few tips for preparing for raceday and building on your summer training.

Registration for autumn events is already open in many cases. And getting signed up is the first step to being at the starting line. It can be a great motivator and get you committed to running when autumn comes around.

Preparing for an autumn event is the best way to build on your summer running. Now you’re running at a high level, it’s a way of keeping your speed and fitness high. But what are you aiming to achieve this autumn?

Your autumn targets
The 2 big milestones for runners are either distance or time . So this autumn, you could aim for a longer distance or try to beat an old personal best.

Going underneath a landmark time in a famous distance is one target you could set. You could build an entire training plan to achieve these times:
  • 10k – under 40 minutes
  • Half-marathon – under 90 minutes
  • Marathon – under 3 hours
If you set one of these times as your target on MY ASICS, it can generate a customised running plan that helps you achieve it. See how you can create a unique running plan

It’s usually best to focus on either time or distance – that way you can totally concentrate on your own race strategy. If you’re aiming for your first marathon, completing it successfully is more important than beating a landmark time.

How to make your targets
  • Find a running partner – training with someone else can help motivate you to get out there and run. They can support you and you can help each other through tough training.
  • Be realistic about training – the weather might be turning colder around your raceday. So it might mean some gym days on the treadmill instead.
  • Commit to an event – registration is open for a lot of races already. Once you’ve committed yourself to a race, it can motivate you to keep training hard.
  • Change gear for new season – because your race might be on a colder day, your gear needs to be right for the conditions. That might mean replacing your summer gear with some warmer attire.
  • Check when the clocks change – the clocks go back in autumn which can affect your running schedule. Either pick a raceday before the date or get some hi-vis gear to keep running through the darker days.
  • Find out the mileage in your shoes – your summer running might have worn out your shoes. But on MY ASICS, you can record how many miles each pair of your shoes has done. Then you can replace them when they’ve gone over a certain point. Record your mileage on MY ASICS
